But to do that, taxpayers now need to be aware of the advantages and limitations of each regime.

So, let’s understand both options and then you can decide which option is best for you. We’ll break down the details to help you make an informed choice for a smoother tax experience this year.

To begin with, the Old Regime offers higher deductions and exemptions. The New Regime however provides a lower tax rate. Both options offer different benefits for different taxpayers.

Here is a comparison snapshot between the two regimes:

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Under the New Regime for example, certain deductions like House Rent Allowance (HRA), Leave Travel Allowance (LTA), and section 80C deductions cannot be claimed, thereby impacting the overall tax liabilities and requiring a different approach for calculating taxable income.

Here is a list of deductions available under the Old & New Regimes:

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
For FY23, the old regime is the default option but an individual can choose to opt for the new regime. However, from April 1, 2023, the new tax regime has become the default tax regime.

Let’s talk about the advantages and limitations of each regime.

\n\n\n\n
The Old Regime
\n\n\n\n
Advantages:

\n\n\n\n

Many deductions are available, including travel and house rent allowance

Deductions under Income Tax Act’s Chapter VI-A, including Section 80C, 80D

Tax deduction on the interest component of a home loan for vacant or self-occupied property

\n\n\n\n
Limitations:
\n\n\n\n

The tax slab rates are higher compared to the new regime

Tax-saving instruments may have long lock-in periods

Filing returns can be complex due to the numerous deductions

The tax slab rates are higher compared to the new regime

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The New Regime
\n\n\n\n
Advantages:

\n\n\n\n

Lower tax slabs

Reduced tax compliance

Decreases the complexity of tax filing

As no tax-saving products are allowed, it helps individuals to invest in products as per the risk profile

\n\n\n\n
Limitations:

\n\n\n\n

The New Regime does not offer as many exemptions or deductions. For instance, the HRA deduction is not available

Absence of incentives for tax-saving products may bring down investments in these products

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Choosing the Right Regime

\n\n\n\n
To make an informed decision, consider your eligible deductions and exemptions in the old regime. If your deductions exceed the break-even threshold for your income level, the old regime may be better.

Otherwise, the new regime could be more beneficial. It’s important to inform your employer about your choice to ensure accurate TDS deductions.

Remember, the choice between old and new regimes depends on your specific income and deductions. To help determine the suitable regime for you, let’s consider a couple of examples:

\n\n\n\n
Example 1: Atul has an income of Rs. 7.50 lakhs with Rs. 2.50 lakhs in deductions (section 80C + HRA) in FY23.
\n\n\n\n

Under the Old Regime: The taxable income would be Rs. 5 lakhs, resulting in zero tax liability.

Under the New Regime: The tax would amount to Rs. 39,000.

\n\n\n\n
In this case, sticking to the Old Regime makes sense as deductions bring down taxable income.

\n\n\n\n
Example 2: Neha has an income of Rs. 9 lakhs and claims no deductions in FY23.
\n\n\n\n

Under the Old Regime: The tax payable would be Rs. 96,200.

Under the New Regime: The tax payable would be Rs. 62,400.

\n\n\n\n
In this example, as there are no deductions, the New Regime offers a lower tax liability.

When choosing between the Old Regime and the New Regime, consider your deductions and exemptions. If you have fewer exemptions, the New Regime may be a better fit.

Remember, everyone’s tax situation is different, so it’s wise to seek advice from a tax expert.

Wishing you a stress-free tax filing season!

\n","wordpress_id":8021,"tags":[{"id":"78dc0092-6fe5-5b1c-92c7-bdbce056f6c6","name":"Tax Regimes FY23"},{"id":"e0101134-fae7-545e-9c63-bf852bb4bdbf","name":"Old Regime vs. New Regime"},{"id":"0460d81c-b52a-5be9-a62d-4feb2ef8ce00","name":"Deductions Comparison"},{"id":"975ca403-b845-5501-8b16-396048c03af3","name":"Default Tax Regime and Recent Changes"},{"id":"b90a19a3-f7cf-5231-bc8d-c8f0bf385deb","name":"Choosing the Right Tax Regime"}],"featured_media":{"localFile":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/47f895fa05177decc6656625b721d8ec/74d1c/F0u7yIRaIAATbD6.jpg","srcSet":"/static/47f895fa05177decc6656625b721d8ec/cd0be/F0u7yIRaIAATbD6.jpg 230w,\n/static/47f895fa05177decc6656625b721d8ec/c2024/F0u7yIRaIAATbD6.jpg 460w,\n/static/47f895fa05177decc6656625b721d8ec/74d1c/F0u7yIRaIAATbD6.jpg 680w","sizes":"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px"}}}}},"allWordpressPost":{"edges":[{"node":{"title":"Insurance Analyser Series – Episode 8 – Critical Illness Insurance","excerpt":"
In today’s world, critical illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and renal disease are on the rise, affecting more lives than ever before. These include:
\n\n\n\n

Cancer

Coronary artery bypass surgery

First heart attack (myocardial infarction)

Kidney failure

Major organ transplant

Stroke

Aorta graft surgery

Primary pulmonary arterial hypertension

Multiple sclerosis with persisting symptoms

Permanent paralysis of limbs, etc

\n\n\n\n
Treating these illnesses can cost anywhere from ₹5 lakhs to ₹50 lakhs.

For example, cancer treatment costs can be substantial, with immunotherapy ranging from ₹30 lakhs to ₹50 lakhs and chemotherapy from ₹20 lakhs to ₹50 lakhs.

Additionally, these illnesses may lead to a permanent loss of employment.
\n\n\n\n

What Is Critical Illness Cover?

\n\n\n\n
Upon the diagnosis of any critical illness specified in your policy, the policyholder is entitled to receive a lump sum payment of the insured amount.

This payout can be used to cover medical expenses and any necessary lifestyle adjustments.
\n\n\n\n
For instance, if Mr. X has a critical illness insurance policy with a coverage amount of ₹50 lakhs, specifically including cancer, and he is diagnosed with cancer years later, the insurance company will provide a lump sum payment of ₹50 lakhs to support his treatment and other related needs.
\n\n\n\n

Benefits of Buying a Critical Illness Cover

\n\n\n\n

Lump Sum Payout

\n\n\n\n
Upon diagnosis of a covered critical illness, you receive a lump sum payout.

This financial support can help cover medical expenses, daily living costs, or any other financial needs during your recovery period.

\n\n\n\n

Lifetime Renewal

\n\n\n\n
Critical illness policies can be renewed for life, ensuring continuous coverage and peace of mind as you age without worrying about losing your insurance benefits.

Once claimed, the policy cannot be renewed.
\n\n\n\n

Specific Illness Coverage

\n\n\n\n
These policies are tailored to cover specific critical illnesses, such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke.

This targeted coverage means you can be assured of financial support when facing these severe health challenges.

\n\n\n\n

Affordable Premiums

\n\n\n\n
Premiums for critical illness cover are generally much lower compared to comprehensive health insurance plans.

This makes it an attractive and cost-effective option for obtaining significant financial protection against major health issues.

\n\n\n\n

Health Insurance vs. Critical Illness Insurance

\n\n\n\n
Health insurance provides coverage for a wide range of illnesses and ensures that your hospital bills are fully paid.

In contrast, critical illness insurance focuses on specific serious conditions and offers a lump sum payout.
\n\n\n\n
One key difference between health insurance and critical illness insurance is that health insurance can be renewed for life, even after making multiple claims.

However, a critical illness cover will end once a claim has been made under the policy.

Here are some additional key distinctions between health insurance and critical illness insurance 👇
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Who Should Buy Critical Illness Coverage?

\n\n\n\n
In our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, critical illnesses are on the rise.

Young individuals are being diagnosed with serious health issues at an early age.

As a result, critical illness coverage is becoming essential for many people.
\n\n\n\n

What Critical Illnesses Should Be Covered in Your Policy?

\n\n\n\n
When it comes to insurance, covering conditions like cancer, heart disease, and renal disease is essential.

However, the broader the range of diseases covered, the higher the cost of your critical illness coverage may be.
\n\n\n\n
Critical illness policies often require a pre-policy medical check-up.

This allows the insurer to accurately assess your health and life conditions.

As part of the process, you might be asked to undergo a medical examination to provide a clear picture of your overall well-being.
\n\n\n\n

Conclusion

\n\n\n\n
Critical illness insurance provides financial support when facing severe health conditions.

By understanding its benefits and how it differs from regular health insurance, you can make an informed decision about whether it’s right for you.

*Disclaimer – This is for information purposes only and not investment advice.
